What's new in the Haswell models?

2nd June 2013 saw Intel unveil its new-generation processor and chipset. The chipset is known as "Shark Bay" with the code named "Haswell" CPUs officially known as "4th Generation Intel Core i7". The Haswell generation of CPUs bring many innovations that we would like to present in detail here:

A new processor nomenclature

Intel Haswell has introduced a new name scheme to the CPU line up. Each Ivy Bridge generation CPU has a direct successor, which shows a respective 5-10% performance increase. The TDP has increased by 2 watts with Haswell, mainly because of the more powerful HD4600 Intel Graphics:

    i7-3630QM -> i7-4700MQ (47W)
    i7-3632QM -> i7-4702MQ (37W)
    i7-3740QM -> i7-4800MQ (47W)
    i7-3840QM -> i7-4900MQ (47W)
    i7-3940XM -> i7-4930MX (57W)

All 5 mobile processors include the Intel HD 4600 (code name: GT2). The new integrated graphics solution is about 75% faster than the HD 4000 in Ivy Bridge.

A new generation of graphics cards from NVIDIA and AMD

To compliment the Intel Haswell and Shark Bay launch, both NVIDIA and AMD have released new graphics cards. The new NVIDIA GTX 765M, GTX 770M and GTX 780M are available immediately from Schenker Technologies. The new AMD Radeon HD 8790M will follow in Q3 2013. You will find an overview of benchmark results of the new NVIDIA cards at notebookcheck. The new cards are based on the same Kepler architecture as some of the 6 series cards, the 7 series bringing performance gains mainly due to increased clock speeds and increased number of CUDA cores.

New Laptops from Schenker Technologies

Schenker Technologies has immediately integrated the Intel Haswell CPUs and new Nvidia GPUs into a new range of laptops:

    XMG P503 PRO
    XMG P703 PRO
    SCHENKER W503 mobile workstation
    SCHENKER W703 mobile workstation

All these models continue the success story of their respective predecessors with increased performance and a further improved cooling system. For the PRO notebooks and workstations the following new features are available:

    - Texas Instruments Firewire XIO2213A TI chipset used. This particularly benefits professional musicians.

    - The new Intel HD 4600 brings triple monitor support (2x external, 1x internal) to the XMG and Schenker range, compared to previous HD4000 Ivy Bridge models which were only capable ot driving a maximum of two monitors.

    - The mSATA slots are now connected via SATA III / 6G, while Ivy Bridge generation models had to make do with SATA-II / 3G mSATA ports. This means that you can now realise the full performance of mSATA flash drives at up to 600MB/s transfer speeds.

    - The PRO models and the W series have a total of 4 storage drive bays. Each notebook has received an additional mSATA slot compared to its predecessor.

- The sound systems of our laptops have been significantly upgraded. The old THX TruStudio Pro has been replaced by Cinema Sound Blaster and Sound Blaster X-Fi MB2 software.

These two mid-range models continue in the same vein as their predecessors. The chassis and external connections are the same, inside the GTX 765m has replaced the old GTX 660M and of course Haswell has replaced Ivy Bridge. As already described, a second mSATA slot can be found (totalling 2x mSATA 6G ports) in addition two HDD / SSD slots. Both laptops - like all Schenker Notebooks – have easy access panels which enable uncomplicated upgradeability and easy cleaning. They differ in this respect from many competing laptops, which are often much harder to upgrade and maintain.

The XMG P503 is a completely new and more modern design compared to its predecessor, with a more performance and gaming orientated aesthetic. Particularly striking is the illuminated touchpad;  this is directly linked to the central zone of the keyboard lighting and can reproduce 8 different colours. In the near future, the touchpad will be available with the XMG logo - to start with however, the P503 will be available with a simple tribal logo. Please refer to the following post for more information:

The XMG P703 also uses a new chassis design. It should be emphasized once again the illuminated touchpad and also an illuminated audio visualization in the display. .

These two models share the more understated but still attractive chassis design of the Ivy Bridge based P502 and P702. The technical components are largely identical to the XMG PRO sister models: all four models (P503, P703, W503 and W703) have the same motherboard and the same cooling systems. All four notebooks thus have the same advantages in terms of peak power, energy efficiency and ease of maintenance. The units can be equipped with the fastest Intel mobile CPU (i7-4930MX) and the fastest mobile graphics card (GTX 780m), thus placing other high-end notebooks in the shade. Deciding on either the Schenker W series or XMG P series is solely down to personal preference, neither option sacrifices performance or value for money!
